Computers have moving parts such as fans on their CPU’s, Power Supplies, Video Cards and in some cases, on the case itself. Each fan is important for the smooth operation of the computer because they keep the system cool. Should dirt, dust, cigarette smoke (which forms a paste when in contact with dust) or pet hair clog up one of these fans and prevent it from spinning, can cause those parts of the computer to overheat and become damaged. Likewise, dirt can clog heat sinks, stick to cables, drives and vents changing the characteristics of the air flowing through the case contributing to overheating of processors and hard drives.

A high dust build up particularily in a dry environment can also build up static electricity. When this static comes in contact with a metal surface, it will look for the shortest distance to ground and discharge. If this happens to be through a sensitive chip on a board in the computer, that discharge can destroy that chip making the computer unuseable.

Dirty keyboards and mice can result in excessive wear, ineffective devices or even damage in some cases.

Dirty printers can cause a host of problems including but not limited to paper jams and uneven printing and even prevent the paper from being picked up from the printers paper tray.

In light of this, cleaning the inside of the computer is something that we recommend be performed once every 6 months to a year under normal circumstances, and even more often in dusty areas.

• Thoroughly clean your PC (inside and out), inspect the internal parts (fans, cards, cables and drives), tighten any loose cards and cables (reroute cables if necessary to improve air flow and cooling).
• Clean the keyboard and mouse.
• Clean the monitor.
• Clean the printer.
• Scan and repair any registry errors.
• Scan and remove adware, spyware and viruses.
• Cleanup any temporary or unnecessary files increasing disk space.
• Optimize startup programs and services that slow down your computer.
• Examine your hard drive for problems often detecting them before they become serious and repair the drive by obtaining low-level access to the magnetic media itself.
• Install anti-virus and anti-malware programs. (If the customer lacks proper protection, User Friendly PC will install Avast! Anti-virus and Malwarebytes Anti-malware free versions.
• Install system updates and updated drivers.
• Defragment hard drive and Windows registry.
